An interview with Murray McLaughlan

SARAH: Hi Murray.
MURRAY: How you doin’ Sarah.
SARAH: I’m good thanks. So I think we’ll start things off a little loose, a little silly. I don’t know if you remember ‘Pop Up Video’ it was on Much Music in the 80′s. They’d play a video and these little thought bubbles would appear over people’s heads with bizarre trivia tid- bits about them.
MURRAY:Yeah I remember that.
SARAH: Sorta like that. Sorta like 25 random things about me but we won’t go to 25. I’ll just ask you a question and you just say whatver pops into your head.
MURRAY: Is this like a Rorschach test or something?
SARAH: Kinda but not really. More like ‘Thing you didn’t know about Murray McLauchlan’. So, let’s see. What’s your favourite beverage.
MURRAY: Well. I’m kinda partial to red wine of a high quality.
SARAH: If you could only choose one album to take with you to a deserted island what would it be?
MURRAY: Oh man. That’s very difficult. Extremely difficult. Okay if I had to pick one it would be Frank Sinatra Live at the Sands with Count Basie and His Orchestra.
SARAH: Alright next. Do you prefer dogs or cats?
MURRAY: I’m a bit of a dog person I think.
SARAH: What’s the most proud you’ve ever been.
MURRAY: The birth of my children. Followed closely by getting the Order of Canada.
SARAH: Do you prefer maple syrup on pancakes or waffles?
MURRAY: Pancakes.
SARAH: What would you say would be the most surprising ’6 degrees of separation’ sort of thing about you. Someone that you’ve met that people would be surprised to hear.
MURRAY: Hmm. Prince Charles.
SARAH: How many guitars do you own.
MURRAY: I don’t own any more than I currently play. I gave my electric guitar away so right now I just own a Yamaha CJ 52 and a handmade Spanish flamenco guitar.
SARAH: What’s your favourite colour?
MURRAY: Well my favourite colour is blue. I’m a boy after all.
SARAH: What was the name of your first band?
MURRAY: My first band? Well the first band I ever led was the Silver Tractors.
SARAH: Wool socks or cotton.
MURRAY: A blend.
SARAH: What’s the strangest thing that someone has ever asked you to sign?
MURRAY: A gal once asked me to sign her stomach slightly below the navel. She had a very nice stomach too I might add.
SARAH: So one of the places we’re going to put this interview is on a new website called experiencethecounty.ca. It’s going to be mainly regional information, stuff about Prince Edward County and one of the things we’re putting on there is people’s first experiences of the County, their first memories. I understand you’ve played in the County before.
MURRAY: I just played the Regent within the last year, actually.
SARAH: And was that your first visit?
MURRAY: Oh no. I’ve been to Prince Edward County on a number of occasions. Mostly just drivin’ a motorcycle around. Just kinda down there, you know, stopping and looking at stuff. Like people do.
SARAH: What would you say is your first memory of the County? Your first experience that you remember here?
MURRAY: Probably just a little general store at an intersection. Just the fact that it was more laid back and prettier than I expected it to be.
SARAH: I guess if you’ve been here toodling around you’ve checked out some of the local sights? What would you say stands out?
MURRAY: I think Picton itself is kind of a pretty little town. It’s sort of consistent with a lot of the towns along the north shore of the lake between Toronto and say, the Kingston area, where they’re a lot older than people think they are. So you find buildings there that were put up, foundations and stuff that date back to the 1700′s.
SARAH: So have you been to the beach?
MURRAY: No I’ve never been there. I always end up visiting people. I have friends that live out there now.
SARAH: You have to go the beach Murray.
MURRAY: Well I grew up on Lake Ontario.
SARAH: Did you?
MURRAY: Well yeah I grew up in Toronto. We have beaches there.
SARAH: Well yeah, you do, but they’re not quite the same. Now I wouldn’t suggest going to the beach in March when you’re here visiting but if you’re back in the summer you’ve got to go. It’s a lot of beach! A lot of sand. A lot of water. Really beautiful.
MURRAY: Will you be there and what will you be wearing?
SARAH: You bet I’ll be there. I will be modestly covered in a suit. But the water’s nice so I’ll definitely be swimming.
MURRAY: When you say a suit – ?
SARAH: I don’t mean a dress suit. I mean a bathing suit.
MURRAY: Are you like a two piece or like a one piece kinda-
SARAH: One piece.
MURRAY: Really? Sorta like a tankini?
SARAH: Sure that’d do. And are you a speedo or a shorts kinda guy?
