This morning, I joined Taste the County staff as they completed the final leg* of their tour of the Arts Trail.
At our first stop, Bloomfield Studios, we were greeted by Mel Wilder who welcomed us in with a warm smile. Mel gave us a tour around his studio explaining the materials and tools he uses to make the large variety of blown glass items—ranging from fine jewelry to beautiful oil lamps—that he’s known for. Next, Mel took us over to the hot oven to demonstrate his craft. I know I speak for all of us when I say it was impressive to see first-hand the different techniques used to create Mel’s work.
Next, we headed to Shattered Gallery/Studio home of Vanessa Pandos. Vanessa is a glass artist who uses antique glasses and found items to create stain glass panels and sculptures—all with her own unique twist. Vanessa took the time to talk to us about some of the projects, including a series called Terroir, she hopes to complete in the near future. I for one, enjoyed seeing her work come to life as it was hit by the winter sun.
Leaving the glass portion of our tour behind, next it was on to Covent Garden Fine Art Gallery located on Main Street, Wellington. Covent Garden showcases fine art from a Canadian group known as The Q. I particularly enjoyed the warm reds and yellows found in the works of artist Lynda Pogue that were on display.
The last stop of our tour was back in Bloomfield at Caroline Shuttle’s Elements Glass Studio. Caroline uses a technique called kiln forming to create a wide variety items including platters, plates, bowls and jewellery. She also produces stunning stain glass windows, which would be a nice edition to any household.
Taste the County has one more Arts Trail stop to make. We’re hoping to visit Peta Hall’s studio before Christmas. Stay tuned for details!
