Fosterholm Farms…delicious homemade pancakes await you!

Monday, March 19th, 2012

This year, enjoy homemade pancakes, grilled sausages and pure maple syrup—made fresh all day long —for Adults $10, Children $5. Work off that breakfast by taking a walking tour of the sugar bush and learn all about maple syrup production in the sugar shack.

Fosterholm Farms

Cliff Foster’s father started making maple syrup in 1924 at the home farm near Sandbanks. He spent everything he had to buy 75 acres, and at first he lived in the barn because the farm had no house. But it had a sugarbush, and he tapped the trees and hung 375 sap buckets. He worked hard, built a house and eventually bought Outlet Farm that had another good sugarbush. So he bought another 325 buckets.

Now Cliff runs Fosterholm Farms with his son Dean with help from his two grandsons. Each year they tap 7,000 trees, but Cliff and Dean no longer hang buckets – they collect sap by running lines to each tree. Taps and lines go in beginning in January and come out in April.

The Foster family evaporator is oil fired, and with the price of oil rising, Cliff is thankful for his reverse osmosis system that removes 70% of the water from the sap before it even reaches the evaporator making huge savings on boiling time. It’s a tough machine, built in 1967 and going strong.

Maple in the County kicks off the season for the Foster family, and in 2005 a thousand people visited them in the sugar shack to enjoy home made pancakes with sausages and as much maple syrup as they wanted. Cliff is generous with his syrup and puts big jugfuls on the table for guests to help themselves. His dad would be proud!

Well-Known Artists Unite at FOR THE LOVE OF THEATRE Fundraiser Gala

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

The Festival Players of Prince Edward County will be hosting its first event of the year on Saturday, February 11th, 2012. Well-known Canadian star of stage and screen Sonja Smits will emcee, guiding guests through an elegant Valentine-themed evening filled with romance, good food, County wine and live entertainment by some of our local theatre’s best-known performers.

Along with a splendid Waring House meal, the evening will also include fabulous live musical theatre performances by John Millard, well-known musical director and composer of Weedy Peetstraw and of Colours in the Storm fame; Michael O’Hara, who appeared many times on the Festival Players stage in such plays as Picton Papers, Ship of Fire, Colours in the Storm and Hank Williams; and Eliza Jane Scott who was loved in Colours in the Storm, Ship of Fire, and, most recently, in Amelia: the Girl Who Wants to Fly.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for theatre lovers to ‘share the love’ a bit, celebrate Valentine’s Day while enjoying their favourite artists and helping to support their local theatre,” said Artistic Director Sarah Phillips.  “We’re thrilled that Sonja is at the helm of this event. She’s an icon in Canadian film, television and theatre and has always encouraged Festival Players, supporting and advising the company since day one.” The evening will also include a live and a silent auction, featuring theatre-related items including a weekend in Stratford, and various theatre-restaurant packages from around Ontario.  The proceeds from the evening will go to support the activities of Festival Players.

“Even when you have a very successful season, which we have had, ticket sales account for barely 30% of the cost of running a professional theatre”, said Phillips.  “We count on fundraising events like this to help us achieve the high calibre theatre our audience has come to expect”.

The evening’s festivities begin at 6pm. Tickets are $100 per person (guests receive a charitable tax receipt for $50 with each ticket purchased). There are a limited number of tickets available. Get yours now and guarantee a seat at what’s sure to be a lovely evening of entertainment! Buy online at CountyTix www.countytix.ca or by phone at 613.471.1991.

Oeno Gallery 3rd Anniversary Celebration

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

On January 21st 2012 the Oeno Gallery will be celebrating its third anniversary at its location adjacent to the Winery and Inn at Huff Estates in Bloomfield. Best known for showing a wide variety of local, Canadian and International contemporary artists in its light filled main building, the Gallery has built a solid reputation in the arts scene in Ontario.

Over the past few years, the Gallery has presented exhibitions of work by senior Canadian abstract artists like Otto Rogers and Louis Jaque and various members of the Royal Canadian Academy such as Edward Falkenberg, Susan Collett and Paula Murray. Recent shows featuring new work by artists Carl Wiens, Alice Teichert, Chris Langstroth, Daniel Hughes, Kim Atlin and Sylvain Louis-Seize have attracted a number of collectors and enthusiasts. The Gallery also exhibits a number of up-and-coming painters, printmakers, and sculptors from across Canada and the United States.

The Oeno Gallery continues to collaborate with other cultural groups, organizing a 50 year retrospective on the career of Graham Metson in partnership with the John M. Parrott Art Gallery and s’posin, a jazz/dance/performance based on Alice Teichert’s paintings, developed with the help of the Quinte Ballet School, the Ontario Arts Council and the Prince Edward County Jazz Festival.

With the help of assistant curator Hri Neil, the Gallery has started dealing in secondary market works, acquiring and selling works by members of the Group of Seven, the Painters Eleven, local artists Manly Macdonald and Tom Mathews and work by other significant Canadian artists.

This past summer marked the launch of Oeno’s Sculpture Garden at Huff Estates, a partnership between the Gallery and Huff Estates. The 3.5 acre sculpture garden, inaugurated on June 25, 2011, features an annual exhibition of outdoor works by over 20 artists. This year, the garden featured work by Shayne Dark, Anne O’Callaghan, Rick Lapointe, Camie Geary Martin, Mark Clark and many others. The works are exhibited against a backdrop of 35,000 perennials, and meandering paths lead to the meditation garden, the rose garden and the pond. A call for new outdoor sculptures is now underway in preparation for the 2012 summer season.

The Gallery hosts many musical performances throughout the year and has been praised for its excellent acoustics. This year it was chosen for the final performance by SuperNova, Canada’s premier chamber music string quartet, during the Prince Edward County Music Festival.

The Gallery begins the 2012 season on January 21st with a dynamic group exhibition, featuring work by many of the gallery artists. Arabella Magazine’s new book on Art, Architecture and Design will be launched at the same time. At the reception, January 21st, 6-8pm, the first limited Sculpture Garden Series wine will be released by Huff Estates – a Sauvignon Blanc. Shayne Dark’s Tanglewood is featured on the label.  Many of the artists will be present, and we hope you can join us to help us celebrate this new season.

Andrew Csafordi, Encaustic Sculptural Painter at “UNIQUE BOUTIQUE”

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

Spectacular paintings that reach beyond the board and stir the imagination.

Andrew brings the viewer into an organic land or skyscape unlike any other. Rich layered textures of imagination, bees wax, fibres, wood, metal and other materials are used in combination to tell a story about “life below the surface” and “the roots that ground the world above”. He then continues to compose beyond the board, with additional materials carefully placed to reach out and add dimension to the piece, taking the eye on a detailed visual journey. Along the way, the work progresses from a painting to a sculptural piece.

Andrew also offers 1 and 2-day Encaustic Painting Workshops year-round.

His Studio: Andrew Csafordi Studio Gallery / www.andrewcsafordi.com

LISTEN TO MIX 97.1 from November 28 to December 2 during morning trivia and you could win a $50 gift certificate to be used towards the purchase of one of Andrew’s paintings (many sizes and prize ranges available) or towards an encaustic painting workshop experience.
