French Country – charming elegance

After 15 years as Toronto’s ‘go-to’ destination for southern France style, ‘French Country’ moved to Main Street Picton last year. The store’s classic wares are artfully put together by owner Viola Jull.  The feeling in the store is eclectic, casual elegance and romantic – often with a touch of whimsy.  Vi’s philosophy is to select beautiful and unique items: interesting light fixtures, framed prints, pewter and crystal table items, wire works, gorgeous linens, lovely french-milled soaps, handcrafted jewelery, ‘Bee’ glassware from France, lavender sachets, Parisian perfumes, kitchen linens and an assortment of items for wine lovers. This Christmas she has brought in a wonderful array of items – tree and table decorations, candle holders, champagne flutes and linens –  to make your holiday sparkle! ‘French County’ is open every day from 10:30am to 5pm. Come in and check it out!

About Viola Jull

Vi’s early professional experience involved working as a freelance stylist for magazine photography.  Later, she became a buyer and set decorator for film and television. In 1988, French Country Antiques Inc. opened in the Toronto Design Centre supplying quality french antiques and accessories to the “trade” – designers and their clients. In 2010, Vi came to the County for a visit and fell in love with the place and people. When she found a ‘store for rent’ sign on Main Street Picton, she decided to move her home and business to Picton.

SCOTTISH ACCENTS Eats – Treats – Cheeses

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

“We are very pleased that our Scottish heritage allows us to bring
the old Scottish favs to folks who appreciate them.”

Owners: Ian and Elizabeth Batt
We are Ian and Elizabeth Batt who found Prince Edward County by chance on a very cold wintery day 2005 and are so pleased we did. The County used to be a well kept secret in Ontario but no more.It is on the map and we are glad to be part of it.

We are both retired from our respective professions and not wanting to sit on the proverbial porch in the rocking chair, we decided to make use of our Scottish roots having emigrated to Canada in 1968. We have pulled on our Scottish Grannies’ recipes and our experiences with organizing Highland Games and Robbie Burns nights. We are very pleased that our Scottish heritage allows us to bring the old Scottish favs to folks who appreciate them.

Our “wee” shop is situated in the perfect village of Wellington, Ontario and to our surprise/delight we have attracted numerous customers with Scottish/British backgrounds.

THE MAKER’S HAND FINE CRAFT SHOW 2011, Prince Edward County

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Festival of Fine Craft
Featuring Original Works by some of
Eastern Ontario’s Finest Artisans

It’s back! The colourful three-day marketplace of fine craft, one-of-kind clothing, jewelry and more. The Maker’s Hand show and sale is a firm favourite with artisans as well as discerning shoppers. “It’s such a friendly, relaxed, easy to enjoy kind of show,” says Janet D’Arcy of Toronto who visits every year. “The organizers really look after the artisans, which puts everybody in a good mood,” says art jewelry maker Maggie Murdoch, and everyone agrees that the work on show is original, inspiring and diverse.
D’Arcy goes straight to the handmade hats while others head for fused glass bowls, big bold jewelry, carved wooden wares, clay, fibre, photography and mind-blowing metal garden sculptures. Snap up indulgent cashmere socks or stock up on clever notebooks and journals made from old Nancy Drews. Browse and enjoy and talk to the artists – and maybe find the perfect gift for someone special.

Admission is $5, refreshments are available, parking is plentiful and free and, on a nice day, the spacious community centre that hosts the show is a pleasant walk from downtown Picton. If you’ve got kids with you, there’s a fantastic skate park in the grounds, too. There’s a reason this show has grown every year for eight years. It’s a divine alternative to crowded malls for holiday shopping with style to spare.
If you’ve never visited Prince Edward County The Maker’s Hand is a great reason to come. For added excitement, The Maker’s Hand coincides this year with Countylicious – the twice-yearly culinary festival that lets you enjoy divine fine dining at down-to-earth prices. Check it out at www.countylicious.ca. The Maker’s Hand show runs 10 am to 6 pm on Friday and Saturday, and 10 am to 4 pm Sunday at 375 Main Street East, Picton. For more information and a peek at the fabulous things you will see here visit www.themakershand.com
