Prince Edward County photographers, Daniel and David Vaughan featured Quinte Arts Council Gallery

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Friday, January 20 at 4p.m. at the Quinte Arts Council Gallery and Gift Shop, 36 Bridge Street, East, Belleville.

The exhibit will feature photographic works by two of our newest members, Daniel and David Vaughan. Daniel uses both traditional photographic and digital methods to create impactful photo art. He focuses on the intimate aspects of his subjects, capturing them in everyday settings and moods. “I have a diverse range of subjects and interests. I try to reflect the simple essence and beauty of a person, object or setting in nature or
everyday life.”

Daniel is also a professional graphic artist and uses his digital skills to incorporate his photography into his design work. He is also an accomplished musician. His recent music project by Vaughan Song, Twelve Guitars, Nine Months and a Pair of Boots, is his debut album of acoustic finger style guitar music, which will be featured at the opening reception on Friday, January 20 from 4 to 7 p.m.

David Vaughan is a photographer with more than 35 years experience shooting travel, portrait, photojournalism, and fine art subjects. He eschews an artist’s statement as such, subscribing to the opinion that art is what the viewer makes of it. “I’m a visual beachcomber, and this is the world as I’ve discovered it. I’m simply pointing a finger at what interests me… hopefully, it interests the viewer as well.” David has more than 30 years experience in the design, advertising and publishing industries and is currently a lead photographer and graphic designer, with his brother, for The Vaughan Group. When you don’t find David behind a camera, he is pursuing fine art projects in pencil and paint.

Also featured in the QAC gallery will be fine wood carvings and prints by Peter Paylor and handmade jewellery by Sia. Be sure to also check out the colourful new works by glass artist, Zak Sieben.

The Boathouse Seafood Restaurant will feature the landscapes, cityscapes and rural cottage scenes in oil by Dennis Stembridge. Niki Mitz, will show her colourful abstracts at Dinkel’s Restaurant & Courtyard. Painter, water media and collage, mixed media artist, Marie Timbers, will show at Mayor Ellis’s office and Quintessential Credit Union. Acrylic artist, Jan Atkinson, will display her whimsical landscapes and bold florals at Earl & Angelo’s Steak and Seafood Restaurant. Known for her sculpture, Mary Lou Ashton will have exciting, new paintings at Skin Beautiful. At Sunlife Financial you will have the opportunity to see Sharon Lee Argyle’s brilliant oil works of contemporary realism.

The Belleville Art Association will change over the work at the Belleville Family Medical Centre on Monday, January 23. You will see new pieces by their talented members in oil, acrylic and watercolour. There will be refreshments sponsored, in part, by Oak Heights Estates Winery, as well as a special
announcement by MPP Todd Smith at 4 p.m.. The show will run until March 2. Everyone is welcome. For more information, please visit www.quinteartscouncil.org.

AMELIA EARHART IN OTTAWA

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

amelia-earhart-goes-to-ottawa For the month of September, Ottawa is going to see a lot of Amelia Earhart. Eliza-Jane Scott stars as iconic aviatrix Amelia Earhart in this new musical, written by John Gray (who wrote the well-known Billy Bishop Goes to War). After another successful run of the show in Prince Edward County this past summer, the Festival Players production of Amelia: The Girl Who Wants to Fly begins September 13th and runs through to October 2nd, 2011, at the Great Canadian Theatre Company in Ottawa.

In 1930’s America the celebrity machine of the day created an idol whose image resonates even now, 70+ years after her death. Amelia Earhart…Why did she want to fly? Where did she come from and how did she become who she was? Gray’s examination of this infamous figure is part biography, part romance, part comedy and part musical. We’re taken along for the ride. And what a thrilling ride it is.

“What an honour, truly. The talent onstage and behind the scenes is immense. The play is a love letter to history, steeped in nostalgia of the period. ” says Artistic Director Sarah Phillips who heads this production. “Of course we all know the name, Amelia Earhart – but what do we know of her really? It’s been fascinating bringing John Gray’s version of this celebrity flier to life.”

The group brought together to work on this show isbrilliant: Eliza-Jane Scott (Festival Players, Stratford Festival, Stage West) plays the title role of Amelia Earhart, Karin Randoja (Buddies in Bad Times, Caravan Farm Theatre, National Arts Centre) plays her earth-bound sister Midge and Steven Gallagher (Grand Theatre, Canadian Stage Company, Driftwood Theatre Company) her publicist turned husband. The trio is joined onstage by music director and pianist Michael Barber (Theatre Aqaurius, Mirvish, Stratford Festival) and Sarah Phillips, Artistic Director of Festival Players, directs.

Amelia: The Girl Who Wants to Fly plays from September 13th – October 2nd, 2011 at the Great Canadian Theatre Company. Check out the GCTC the website for schedule details, www.gctc.ca.

Waupoos Estates Winery End of Summer Celebration – The 1st Annual Grapevine Telegraph Music Festival

Friday, August 26th, 2011

waupoos-poster-copyThe County’s oldest winery has undergone some massive transitions this summer. Already home to one of the most coveted scenic spots in the County, Waupoos Winery has created even more reasons to visit – new ownership, a new Chef and restaurant expansion, a chocolate shop, and a waterfront patio are just a few of the changes that Waupoos Estates Winery can be proud of.

Despite delays in re-opening caused by the renovation, Waupoos opened its new restaurant doors to the public this June and the response has been overwhelming. Often seating 200 for dinner on weekends, the expansion was well worth the wait, and the new owners want to celebrate! To thank their generous supporters and patient customers this coming weekend Waupoos Estates Winery will host the first annual Grapevine Telegraph – a festival of music, family fun, food and wine.

The event is a multi-day affair starting with a fish fry this Friday, August 26th from 4-8pm. Live music will accompany the feast, and tickets are $12.00 for kids, $8.00 for children.  Bring the whole family on Saturday, August 27th for an all-day music festival – performances by Eden Hertzog, Chris Assad, Mel Larkin, Ariana Gillis, Brian Macmillan and Nine Mile, alongside kids activities, wagon rides, classic cars, prizes, and a 9pm firework show will complete this fun-filled event. If you’re not too tired by Sunday, join the Waupoos family for a pancake breakfast on Sunday morning on the patio from 9am -12pm, served with bacon, sausages and fresh fruit.

This event marks the first of many events Waupoos Winery sees in their future. For more information on performances, and ticket prices please visit their website or contact them directly at 613.476.8338. Peter Appleyard Salutes Benny Goodman’

Thursday August 18, 8 pm

Peter Appleyard is a beloved veteran of the Canadian jazz scene and an Officer of the Order of Canada. He’s toured and performed with everybody who’s anybody in the jazz world, including Sinatra, Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald.

Appleyard has the ultimate stamp of approval to play a Goodman tribute: he’s a former member of the Benny Goodman sextet, and played with the master himself at Carnegie Hall. Following Goodman’s death, Appleyard joined forces with some Goodman alumni and top Toronto musicians to form the ‘Benny Goodman Tribute Band’ in 1985. It is the present-day form of that band which will salute Goodman’s music this year.

There is one last minute change of artist for Thursday August 18 at the 10pm “After Hours Jam Session” at Currah’s Restaurant.

John Sherwood will appear instead of Robi Botos. John Sherwood is an accomplished jazz pianist who was born with perfect pitch. He regularly plays with Peter Appleyard, Terry Clarke, Dave Young, and Pat Collins to name just a few. He has numerous engagements at many Jazz Festivals in Ontario this summer. See www.johnsherwood.ca for more information.

(The Robi Botos Trio will still be performing at Currahs in After Hours Jam Session on Friday Aug. 19 and Saturday Aug. 20.)

Guido Basso and Ranee Lee

Friday August 19, 8 pm

One of the pre-eminent musicians in Canada lives right here in the County, and he’ll be playing at the Regent August 19 as a featured artist of the Prince Edward County Jazz Festival.

Guido Basso is widely acclaimed as a flugelhornist, trumpeter, arranger, composer, conductor, and harmonica player. He’s played with all the greats (Dizzy Gillespie, Oliver Jones, Diana Krall), worked on dozens of recordings as both leader and sideman, won a Juno (in 2004 for Lost In the Stars), and has been named to the Order of Canada.

Basso is the Artist-in-Residence for the Prince Edward County Jazz Festival, and Creative Director Brian Barlow knows him well. ‘Guido Basso is a Canadian jazz legend who happens to live in the County.  I have to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming when I realise that I can see him perform right here at the Regent Theatre.’

Sharing the bill with Guido will be Ranee Lee, one of  Canada’s most popular jazz vocalists. Her unique vocal stylings and sense of melody are featured on her 2010 CD Ranee Lee Lives Upstairs, which won a Juno award for best Vocal Jazz Album. Ranee is a native of Brooklyn, but has called Montreal home for many years.

Basso and Lee are a simpatico and harmonious jazz pairing, and the August 19 show promises to be a world-class concert, right here on Main St Picton.

The Mike Murley Septet

Saturday,  August 20, 8 pm

Mike Murley is one of Canada’s leading jazz talents. His lyrical saxophone style is distinctive and always a treat for his audience. He’s played on nine Juno Award-winning albums and has been named saxophonist of the year eight times by the Jazz Report/National Jazz Awards. His latest release, ‘Still Rollin’, is the debut recording for his new septet which includes such jazz notables as Dave Braid and Kevin Turcotte.

The Brian Barlow Big Band

Sunday August 21, 8 pm

Since its formation in 2004, the Brian Barlow Big Band has gone on to become one of Canada’s most highly regarded big bands. This evening they will be paying a tribute to two of the all-time great big bands: The Duke Ellington Orchestra and the Count Basie Orchestra. It’s a case of a talented band showing their appreciation for the bands which established the tradition in which they work.

Special guests joining the band are: Heather Bambrick (see more information below on Heather under the Jazz Brunch) and vocalist Justin Bacchus who has had the honour of performing with many Canadian greats like Joe Seally, Jackie Richardson, Dionne Taylor and Matt Dusk (see www.justinbacchus.com for more details.)
