Susan’s Just Because – bed. bath. kitchen.

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Useful kitchen items, beautiful bedding and towels, and great accessories for your home and bath.

Since the summer of 2002, Susan’s Just Because has been a part of Downtown Picton.  In the spring of 2009, Susan Cooke brought together her kitchen and bed and bath stores into one beautiful location in the Edward building at 280 Main St.  Here you will find useful kitchen items, beautiful bedding and towels, and great accessories for your home and bath.  Many local brides use their Bridal Registry and choose from quality brands that will provide years of pleasure.

Susan’s Just Because has a large assortment of beautiful sheets and bedding in stock.  They also have a variety of fabric samples to view should your choice or size not be in the store.    Natural fabrics such as Egyptian cotton and wool are a comfortable and affordable choice.  Susan’s also has a large selection of pillows and duvets from microfiber to goose down, so you may choose exactly what is right for you.

Susan’s Just Because is the place to find the perfect gift for everyone on your list this year, and the staff look forward to welcoming you to the store.

Strong Sense of Community Moved Picton Sobey’s Owner to Partner with Local Farms.

The summer months are bursting with local produce from ample farm stands that dot the County’s countryside. Unfortunately, sometimes it’s hard to make it there. Locals and tourists alike inevitably head to the grocery store to stock their pantries. Luckily, some franchisee’s, like Jamie and Mary Clare Yeo, believe so much in the greatness of Prince Edward County agriculture, that they ensure their store carries farm-stand local freshness, alongside necessary kitchen essentials.

First franchised by the Yeo’s ten years ago as an IGA, they have seen the face of the County change, especially the push to support local food. Immediately struck by the strong sense of community upon moving to the County from Peterborough, the Yeo’s sought to emulate the support for local business they saw around them, and began partnering with local farms. In the beginning one or two items in the store were sourced locally; today, year-round and seasonal partnerships with over ten local farms, and five “from away” contributors (from Belleville to BobCaygeon) contribute to the abundance of local goods available to shoppers. Much to Jamie Yeo’s delight, the majority of people will choose local produce over imported. He explains that even when faced with brand name, less-expensive products like maple syrup, most customers still purchase local Fosterholm Farms syrup – a popular item at Picton Sobeys. In fact, Yeo has had to form partnerships only with farms able to keep up with demand and deliver the amount of product he needs – a whopping $162,000 was sold in County products alone at the Picton Sobeys in 2010. The level of grassroots support that Jamie and Mary Clare embody is infectious in their partners. “There’s a real sense of community here,” reflects Yeo. In fact, it’s not uncommon for local suppliers to call him and recommend another farm if they don’t have the quantity or quality that he’s looking for.

Recently, Picton Sobey’s attempted their first ‘tasting’ of some of the County products featured in their store. Brad Lynd from County Roasters served freshly roasted County coffee, while Cherryvale Organic Farm gave customers great recipe ideas for using their local, organic spelt flour — customers can expect to see more of this in the future. The Yeo’s believe their passion and commitment to promoting local food has had a direct result on the success of their store – it’s clear that they care about the products they’re promoting, and value the relationships behind them.

To see what’s in stock at Picton Sobey’s visit them at 97 Main St., Picton, Ontario.

Arts Trail, Final Stops

Friday, June 12th, 2009

It’s official, as of today, thanks to visits to Peta Hall Gallery and Round the Bend Gallery, I’ve been to every gallery and artist studio on Prince Edward County’s Arts Trail. The tour, which has spanned many months, has truly been a journey of discovery and I look forward to repeating it often.

petahall2_webAt Peta’s, I caught the artist working on a bowl on her potter’s wheel. Despite the interruption she kindly took the time to walk me through her studio and to talk about her participation in Clay, an exhibit that opens tomorrow evening (Saturday, June 13) at Blizzmax gallery in South Bay.

For the show, African-born Peta created a number of works inspired by her travels to places like Burma, Mozambique and Tanzania, which she says are more sculptural than a lot of her other work. In the shape of huts and houses, many of them wood fired, she explained that they act as a sort of meditation on the question of “where is home.” (Clay runs until June 28. For info call 613.476.7730.)

Not far outside of Picton, along the shores of Picton Bay, artist Andrew Innes’ gallery is situated on his lovely tree-ringed property. The setting is peaceful and must be inspirational. Indeed, one of Andrew’s assemblages (three dimensional mixed media constructions) that I admired was clearly inspired by the view.

andrewinnes2_webAt his intimate gallery, Andrew shows his own vivid watercolours, pencil drawings and assemblages along with sculptures by Bunny Bates and works by Kingston-based glass artists, Mariel Waddell and Mischka Hunter.

If you attended the Quinte Arts Council’s annual juried show, Expressions 2009, you might recognize Andrew’s works as he won the Juror’s Choice Award for his work entitled Waiting and Wondering.

Tuesday Night at the Movies

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

murraymclauchlanposterIt’s a nice treat to go to the movies on a Tuesday night. For a mere $5.00 ticket and the cost of a popcorn and a drink you’ve got yourself an affordable evening of entertainment at The Regent Theatre in Picton (and you don’t have to drive to Belleville). A trip to the Regent Theatre is always a pleasure. I like to arrive a little early so I can take time to and admire the historic old building from my seat. It must have been something in its day. Give yourself a treat, take in movie, a concert (like the upcoming Maple in the County Murray McLauchlan in concert) or a theatrical production in this grande old theatre and enjoy the treasure we have in our midst. You won’t be disappointed. Enjoy!
