Prince Edward County Museums launch Memory Trail website

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

The Museums of Prince Edward County celebrated Heritage Week with the launch of an exciting new web presence www.countymemorytrail.ca. The project was initiated at the time of the rehabilitation project at Macaulay Church to improve access to the museum’s collections, as museums typically display 10 to 15% of their collections at any given time.

People visit and stay in Prince Edward County because of its natural charm, its extraordinary restaurants and wineries, its entrepreneurial spirit, its talented artistic community, and woven through it all is a character steeped in history. The County Memory Trail is a great online experience for learning more about our historical sites and the valuable heritage resources Prince Edward County has to offer.

Available online at www.countymemorytrail.ca

  • Macaulay Church museum’s collection (approximately 7000 artifacts) are now available for viewing for staff and public use. The museum will continue to upload its digitized collections.
  • A “virtual interactive walkthrough” of Macaulay Church will allow online viewers to control movement, and have the ability to select artifacts of interest. When selected, (via mouse or touch screen) either a minidocumentary pop up, or IVC (Interactive Video Content).

Macaulay Church facility opportunities

  • Macaulay Church is now a new and improved facility but also a cultural space that is available to the public in a variety of ways, from travelling exhibitions and educational programming to private rentals for performances, celebrations and receptions year-round.

Third Annual Seedy Saturday, February 25

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Saturday, February 25, 2012
St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 31 King Street, Picton, Ontario

Seedy Saturday is a community event primarily featuring an opportunity for local gardeners to exchange the seeds they have saved. It’s a non-profit public event operated by volunteers. And it’s a special chance for gardeners to find heritage seed varieties and share their seed-saving stories. For more information about Seedy Saturdays, which have been held across Canada for over twenty years, go to www.seeds.ca, which is the website for Seeds of Diversity, a non-profit organization devoted to protecting the seed heritage of Canada (and the world).

This will be the third Seedy Saturday held in Prince Edward County. Last year approximately 150 people were in attendance.

To cover the costs of Seedy Saturday, the organizers are putting together a small raffle basket. This year the basket will be food-focused: preserves, jams, honey, other edibles. Contact: Co-chairs Patricia Gale (613-476-9724) and Fred Holtz (613-393-1731)

Below is a look at Seedy Saturday from 2011.

Prince Edward County photographers, Daniel and David Vaughan featured Quinte Arts Council Gallery

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Friday, January 20 at 4p.m. at the Quinte Arts Council Gallery and Gift Shop, 36 Bridge Street, East, Belleville.

The exhibit will feature photographic works by two of our newest members, Daniel and David Vaughan. Daniel uses both traditional photographic and digital methods to create impactful photo art. He focuses on the intimate aspects of his subjects, capturing them in everyday settings and moods. “I have a diverse range of subjects and interests. I try to reflect the simple essence and beauty of a person, object or setting in nature or
everyday life.”

Daniel is also a professional graphic artist and uses his digital skills to incorporate his photography into his design work. He is also an accomplished musician. His recent music project by Vaughan Song, Twelve Guitars, Nine Months and a Pair of Boots, is his debut album of acoustic finger style guitar music, which will be featured at the opening reception on Friday, January 20 from 4 to 7 p.m.

David Vaughan is a photographer with more than 35 years experience shooting travel, portrait, photojournalism, and fine art subjects. He eschews an artist’s statement as such, subscribing to the opinion that art is what the viewer makes of it. “I’m a visual beachcomber, and this is the world as I’ve discovered it. I’m simply pointing a finger at what interests me… hopefully, it interests the viewer as well.” David has more than 30 years experience in the design, advertising and publishing industries and is currently a lead photographer and graphic designer, with his brother, for The Vaughan Group. When you don’t find David behind a camera, he is pursuing fine art projects in pencil and paint.

Also featured in the QAC gallery will be fine wood carvings and prints by Peter Paylor and handmade jewellery by Sia. Be sure to also check out the colourful new works by glass artist, Zak Sieben.

The Boathouse Seafood Restaurant will feature the landscapes, cityscapes and rural cottage scenes in oil by Dennis Stembridge. Niki Mitz, will show her colourful abstracts at Dinkel’s Restaurant & Courtyard. Painter, water media and collage, mixed media artist, Marie Timbers, will show at Mayor Ellis’s office and Quintessential Credit Union. Acrylic artist, Jan Atkinson, will display her whimsical landscapes and bold florals at Earl & Angelo’s Steak and Seafood Restaurant. Known for her sculpture, Mary Lou Ashton will have exciting, new paintings at Skin Beautiful. At Sunlife Financial you will have the opportunity to see Sharon Lee Argyle’s brilliant oil works of contemporary realism.

The Belleville Art Association will change over the work at the Belleville Family Medical Centre on Monday, January 23. You will see new pieces by their talented members in oil, acrylic and watercolour. There will be refreshments sponsored, in part, by Oak Heights Estates Winery, as well as a special
announcement by MPP Todd Smith at 4 p.m.. The show will run until March 2. Everyone is welcome. For more information, please visit www.quinteartscouncil.org.
