ED NEUSER – TOO BUSY TO BE CROWNED KING

Friday, September 17th, 2010

ed-neuser-for-blogSome people call Ed Neuser a Pioneer of the new wine industry in Prince Edward County. Others call him the Grandfather of County Wine (better than being called the Godfather, I guess!) Pioneer, Grandfather, Groundbreaker – Ed has been called all these things and more (not all of them printable) and this year he almost had “king” added to the list in a close-run race to be crowned Grape King of Ontario 2010 by the Grape Growers of Ontario. “It was a great honour to be in the running,” he told me. “But as we got closer to the choosing, I withdrew. I am so busy,” he explained. “It’s been a hell of a year at Waupoos Winery, and I didn’t think I could take time off to travel around being a royal and attending official functions.” I couldn’t tell if he was serious or kidding me – which he does a lot. But either way, Ed bowed out and the equally influential winemaker, Dr. Debbie Inglis from Niagara wears the title (Grape Queen actually) for 2010. But Ed was within grape-spitting distance of it. And it’s kind of a shame because he would look terrific in a king’s purple robe with all that white hair! If you’ve never met Ed and the lovely Rita Kaimins (the Queen of Waupoos Winery) you might run into them pouring their wines for the enjoyment of the people at TASTE! a celebration of regional cuisine in Picton on September 25.

Showcasing the “County” One Video at a Time

Trevor Crowe wants to showcase Prince Edward County. His company Crowe Video Productions is a local, full-time producer of the latest web videos and specializes in capturing local businesses in a creative way. Crowe’s company also provides training and online tutorial videos, live event streaming through social media, multi-cam event recording to Blu-ray, wedding videography and film or VHS transfers to DVD. This extensive list of activities keeps his team busy!

Since setting up shop in Picton in the spring of 2010, business has quadrupled. Today’s County retailers, whether they are art galleries or cheese factories, “rely on traffic from websites and social media sites for their business,” Crowe shares. Crowe Video Productions’ work entices web viewers to stop and look at dazzling videos posted on his clients’ websites. In one project, County Showcase, he collaborates with the local Prince Edward County associations to produce short business web videos that will be prominently featured on tourism and visitor homepages. He sites that statistically, 90% of tourists go online to plan their trips. Crowe feels that his compelling videos increase the chances of a tourist choosing his clients’ businesses.

Crowe and his wife are out house hunting to move their family back to Prince Edward County. Crowe Video Productions’ is committed to becoming a fixture in a growing community. Supporting an event like TASTE! a celebration of regional cuisine came from a desire to be a part of this region’s growth. Crowe Video Productions will be on location shooting a promotional piece for the event and rubbing shoulders with clients who know the success of his work. Then he’ll get back to house shopping.

Visiting Studio

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

moontide1This week Grace and I dropped off 2,500 Prince Edward County Visitors Guides and rack cards for TASTE! a celebration of regional cuisine and Countylicious at Moontide Studio Gallery where Tara Wilkinson was collecting the promotional materials of seven local businesses in order to pass them on to CTM Media Group for distribution. (Many thanks to Tara.)

moontide2While we were there, Tara’s husband artist Andrew Csafordi gave us a tour around their lovely lilac-ringed property, which comprises several out buildings that house various workspaces including Tara’s studio/gallery, Love Nest Studios, and a large barn where Andrew’s encaustic artworks that incorporate materials such as beeswax and twigs are on display. Visit them the next time you’re travelling the Arts Trail.

taste_glassEven though it’s more than five months away, Taste the County is already busy getting ready for this year’s TASTE! a celebration of regional cuisine, which will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2009. Eastern Ontario’s premier epicurean experience, TASTE! is a Top 100 Festival in Ontario and an excellent way for local food and beverage producers to showcase their mouth-watering wares.
Anyone interested in taking part can contact Grace (grace.taste@bellnet.ca) for details.

Prince Edward County’s reputation as a compelling tourism destination received a major boon last week as two of the region’s premier events earned the title of Top 100 Ontario Festival. TASTE! a celebration of regional cuisine (www.tastecelebration.ca) won the designation for the first time, while Maple in the County (www.mapleinthecounty.ca) won the prestigious designation for the second year in a row. Sweet!
