“Unique Cooking School Opens in Prince Edward County”

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Cynthia Peters hosted dignitaries and new Taste the County partners to the launch of From the Farm Cooking School opening in June.

Cynthia Peters hosted dignitaries and new Taste the County partners to the launch of From the Farm Cooking School opening in June.

Owner, personal chef and food writer Cynthia Peters will bring the joy of cooking local foods to her guests by providing the ultimate field to table food experience, starting in June 2010.

From the Farm culinary experiences include harvesting produce at local farms and hands-on cooking classes in a state-of-the-art kitchen at Willow Hill farmhouse. This beautifully restored 1850’s home is located in the heart of the popular wine-growing region, Hillier Township. The teaching area, dining room and the rural setting provide clients with a relaxed and authentic experience. Students will learn about the region, its food and wine, and the stories behind the menu they create together.

“Today, people are interested in knowing where their food comes from. They also want to prepare more meals from scratch for better taste and health, especially for their families. From the Farm provides an enjoyable opportunity to learn first hand and have a fun afternoon in the country” commented Peters. “Our menus are customized for each group and are built on traditional recipes from around the world, so people can choose a menu that works best for their tastes and preferences.”

Peters and her team entertain classes up to eight individuals. Programs are designed for groups interested in a shared farm experience, couples looking for a fresh approach to cooking and entertaining, and themed classes for those who want to learn new menus with like-minded people.

From the Farm believes in giving back to the community by supporting programs that enable others, through education and accessibility, to enjoy healthy food everyday. A portion of every cooking class will be donated toward a community food security initiative in Ontario. People participating in cooking classes have the opportunity to give back too with a portion of their time by harvesting food for the local food banks through the “Farm Experience” package.

Passionate about food and well-being, Peters has been actively involved in a number of community food endeavors, including the Ontario Association of Food Banks, Slow Food, and Foodshare. She is a food writer, personal chef and honors graduate of Liaison College of Culinary Arts, and holds certificates from the Cordon Bleu in Ottawa. Peters co-founded The Spice Sisters, a personal chef services business in Toronto. Today she owns and operates From the Farm Cooking School and From the Farm Enterprises Inc. in Prince Edward County.

Picton, ON – Taste the County has done it again. The regional tourism Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) has taken home two awards at the prestigious 2009 Ontario Tourism Summit held in Windsor, Ontario at the end of September.

Taste the County received the marketing award for Best Printed Collateral Material. This award was in recognition of the organization’s latest media kit, romantically titled “Escape to the County”. The media kit, designed in partnership with Scout Design,
featured a travel journal stuffed full of trinkets and postcards, wine labels and recipe cards – the kinds of things one would pick up as keepsakes of an enjoyable journey. The goal was to entice travel writers and journalists all over the world to explore and promote
Prince Edward County.

Taste the County was also recognized for its work since 1999 promoting culinary tourism, and took home the Culinary Tourism Leadership Award sponsored by the Ontario Culinary Tourism Alliance. Taste has provided leadership in crafting unique, self-sustaining experiences and events that showcase and preserve what is unique in Prince Edward County – a rich agricultural heritage and a strong connection to the land – as well as demonstrating that partnerships between businesses add value to the consumer and
enrich the visitor experience.

Countylicious, this year a month-long fixed price menu promotion hosted at a number of local restaurants and developed by Taste the County with its members, was a finalist for Best Marketing Campaign under $25,000.

Taste the County is Prince Edward County’s award-winning non-profit destination marketing organization. Its mission: to successfully promote the region as a unique destination to stimulate growth.

A Year in Review

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

agmThanks to all who came out to last night’s AGM. Approximately 40 people turned out to hear our executive director, Kathy Kennedy, talk about the highlights from the past year as well as what the future might hold. Carlyn Moulton, Taste the County board member (and co-owner of Oeno Gallery), also took the floor to speak about the very important Tourism Competitiveness Study, which was released in February by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism. As the study makes various recommendations including the establishment of new tourism regions and the standardization of Destination Marketing Fees (a fee on the room portion of a guest bill), we recommend our partners read it as it will affect us all.

In addition, the chair of the board, Ginny Merritt (Roger’s Hospitality) welcomed four new board members: Marilyn Carson of Carson Bay Farms, Bernie Gray of Bernie Gray Kayaking, Erin Jones of Terra Vista Landscape & Construction Supplies and Richard Johnston of By Chadsey’s Cairns Winery and Vineyard.

A fond farewell was also made to longtime board members Carl Joly (pictured above right), of One Main Street Bed and Breakfast and Jeremy Gander (left) of Ganders Bed & Breakfast. The two have served on our board so long that Ginny joked that no other board member could remember when they first started. We wish Carl and Jeremy all the very best!
